General Questions

Q. Where is your bookstore located?

A. Our bookstore is located in the new University Union building, next to the Information Center. New to campus? Click here for a campus map.

Q. What information do I need to bring with me to purchase my textbooks?

A. To best assist you in finding all of the textbooks you need, we ask that students bring their class schedule, including your professor's name, course name & number, and section number. This will help us find the correct textbooks for the courses that you are taking. Sometimes two different professors teach the same course but different sections, and use different sets of textbooks.

Q. What should I do if a textbook that I need is sold out?

A. Sometimes textbooks are temporarily unavailable at the beginning of the semester. This may be because we received a late order from the professor, the textbook is delayed due to shipping problems, or it has simply sold out. If this occurs for a textbook that is required for your class, we encourage you to fill out a Reserve Card. This will reserve a copy of the textbook for you, and as soon as it arrives we will notify you immediately. Please come to the textbook service desk for further assistance.

Q. Do you sell items other than textbooks?

A. Of course! The Phoenix Bookstore is your official collegiate store for UWGB apparel, as well as other gift items. You can shop our website for some of these items or come into our store and check out what we have to offer!

Q. Does the bookstore sell audio books?

A. The Phoenix bookstore is proud to team up with audible.com, an online audio book vendor to offer over 60,000 titles to students at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. Please follow the link below to for more information on great deals for audio books.

Q. I am interested in working in the bookstore. Could I have an application?

A. The Phoenix Bookstore is proud to offer employment for qualified UW-Green Bay students. Candidates must be enrolled in a minimum of six undergraduate credits or five graduate credits and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 to be eligible for employment. Applications can be picked at the textbook service desk.

Q:
Why are textbooks so expensive?

A: Textbook prices are a common problem for all college students. One misconception is that the Phoenix Bookstore takes in a big profit on the high priced new textbooks, but this is actually not the case. For every dollar spent on a new textbook, the bookstore typically receives 4.5 cents (pre-tax). So where does the rest of this money go? According to data provided by the National Association of College Stores, almost 65% of every dollar spent on a new textbook goes back to the book publisher to cover the costs of book development. This graph shows where your money goes when you buy a new textbook.

Q.
Can the store try and pick cheaper books?

A.
The Phoenix Bookstore is not directly involved in the selection of textbooks for your classes. Your professors are given the choice after reviewing many different textbook options. The professors will then instruct us which books we should order. We will try as much as we can to keep the price of your textbooks down, for example by encouraging the faculty to choose their textbooks early so we can get as many used copies as possible.

Book Buyback Questions

Q: Why are some books worth more than others?

A. The value of a used textbook depends on if that book will be used by the professor next semester. Books that we have orders from the professor for the next term will have a higher value than books that will not be used. If we receive an order from the professor for your textbooks, then we will buyback copies of that book for resale in the store. If this happens, we will typically give you 50% of the new value of the textbook.

If the professor decides not to use the textbook next semester, we will check with a wholesale book company to find out the national market value of the book. Used book wholesalers buy the books from you and sell them to other campuses around the country. The Phoenix bookstore has no influence on what the value of these books will be, because it is set by the wholesale companies.

Q.
Why is the store not buying back some of my books?

A.
There can be several reasons that the store cannot buyback your textbook. Book publishers typically release new editions to textbooks every few years. If this is the case, and the professor wants the new edition, the older edition that you may have purchased could no longer have value. The Phoenix Bookstore also cannot buyback your textbook if the front or back covers are missing, if there are missing pages, or water damage. Also, if the textbook came in with a pack (i.e. CD or other supplemental materials) we may need those additional items as well.

Q. I live out of town and cannot come to the bookstore during your buyback. What should I do?

A. If for any reason you are unable to come to the Phoenix Bookstore during our retail buyback days you can always send the books to us. We will process them in our system and send you a check for the buyback value of your textbooks. Please note that some textbooks may have no buyback value.  If you would like us to return books with no buyback value we will need to charge you for the return freight.  If you would not like us to return textbooks that have no retail value to you we will donate them to a local charity.

It is also very important that we receive the books during our retail buyback period to get the most value for your textbooks. So for example if we are holding our spring buyback during finals week, we would need to recieve your textbooks during the week, otherwise we would not be able to give you the best value for your textbooks.  Please send the textbooks to:

Phoenix Bookstore
Attn: Book Buyback
2420 Nicolet Drive
Green Bay, WI 54311

Be sure to include who we should write the check out to and to which address we should send it.  If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact us at 920-465-2323 or 800-321-UWGB.

Q. Can you recommend any steps to help me get more value for my textbooks?

A. Of course! First off make sure you take good care of your textbooks. Any heavy wear and tear could lower the value of your textbooks at buyback. Secondly, keep all of the supplemental materials that came with your textbooks such as CDs or workbooks. Sometimes you can get a better value when you have these materials at buyback. Lastly, if possible try to sell your books at the beginning of the buyback period (typically during finals week for the fall and spring semesters).

Textbook Ordering Questions

Q. Why are the prices totaling on my quote at the new price only?

A. Used availability for each book varies, so we quote you the new cost at time of order so you are aware of the most you would possibly pay.

Q. Am I charged when I place an order?

A. No: After we pull your order, and any books that are not available are noted, we charge your account for the actual books you are being shipped. Depending on used book availability, that may be a smaller total than what your original order was quoted.

Q. When will my books be shipped?

A. Once we receive your textbook order it will take us typically 1-2 business days to process and ship. Students can pick up EZbook orders for fall 2009 August 31st - September 3rd in the University Union Alumni Room.

Q. Is there any way for me to reduce the price of new textbooks for next semester?

A. Yes. Consult the course catalog to find out who the instructors are for the classes you intend to take the next semester. (If no instructor is listed for a course, you may ask the department chair of that school or college to check if he or she knows.) Ask those instructors to please submit their book requests to the bookstore by the early adoption deadline (early June for the fall semester and late October for the spring semester). This will help you because the earlier we receive the order, the more likely we can get used textbooks.

Q. What is the difference between an "ebook" and a normal textbook?

A. The Phoenix Bookstore is pleased to offer ebooks as an alternative to traditional textbooks. Please read the following information about ebooks so you can make the best choice for your course. An ebook is basically your textbook either physically scanned or as a ".pdf" file for viewing. So what are the differences between the two? Ebooks are typically cheaper than traditional textbooks, however ebooks can not be sold back at the end of the semester at book buyback. Ebooks also have restrictions depending on the company that is providing the service. For example, the availability of copying, printing, and reading aloud varies based on which kind of ebook is available. You may want to determine if you will want these services and if they are available before you decide to purchase an ebook. In addition, in some cases ebooks have expiration dates which will mean that you can no longer view the book after a certain period of time. Lastly, please make sure your home computer can meet the system requirements before activating your ebook.
